Jo Baker is a really talented writer and I can't fault this book in any way. All I can say is it was a miserable read. The subject matter is devastating to read about, but I've read other novels set in Nazi-occupied Paris or during WWII years in Europe and felt more drawn in where as this one kept me at a distance somehow. I did find it strange that she never mentions Beckett by name. The entire story, while beautifully subtle and sensitively written, just seemed meandering and almost meaningless to me. I by far prefer Kristin Hannah and Ruta Sepetys.
I know nothing of Beckett and probably missed many allusions to his work in this. However, I found this deeply absorbing and probably a truer account of war than one with lots of fighting. It's a long hard slog, these characters' lives, and their resilience in the face of hardship is admirable. A fascinating read.
