Favorite part was to keep books from people you know on your night stand or close by so your friends and acquaintances are close.
4 Stars - I love to read books about books and reading. This is a very enjoyable book. It will stretch your vocabulary (something i consider to be a good thing), you will learn a lot about the author's family and her upbringing because those things are fully intertwined with all things books for her. The book consists of essays she has written over a few years, and i would give the book 5 stars but for one essay which completely frustrated me: an essay about plagiarism entitled "Nothing new under the sun". If you are afflicted with the virus of bibliophilism, you'll love this book too.
A wonderful collection of essays about the life and thoughts of a bibliophile. I saw a great deal of myself in the author, and her feelings towards books. Perfect to dip in an out of. That being said, I read it cover to cover without putting it down...

Now that I've finished this book - I can give it 5 stars. The language and the writing are lyrical and enticing. My favorite essay so far is about the merging of her and her husband's libraries after years of marriage... I got it from the library - and am now planning on purchasing it (and a copy for my grandmother too). HIGHLY recomended for book lovers!
I've wanted to read this for a long time and it came at the right moment, being a huge breath of fresh air after all the death and doom that lured in the books I've read recently. It covers a lot of the usual topics related to books - from how we treat the physical objects to the little inscriptions we place on them when we give them as a gift. It's clear that Anne Fadiman poured herself into these essays and because of this, you get to actually like her - it's impossible not to. I chuckled, I "aww"-ed, I jotted down books I now want to read and I felt twinges of envy while reading about her bookloving family, their enormous library and verse memorizing ways. In a few words - charming, smart and lovable.
Very nice love letters (in a sense) to books and reading in all shapes and forms (catalogues, anyone?). I only wish it were a bit longer.
Incidentally, I bought my copy used (I'm sure Fadiman, with her love of secondhand bookstores and books, would approve) - the previous owner had only read through the Preface, the rest of the pages were untouched (Fadiman would not approve).

This is truly literary candy. It was a joy to read and I had to ration it so I didn't devour it too quickly (the only other book I've had to do this with was a tree grows in Brooklyn so this is truly an honor). This is the first and only book I've found myself compulsively annotating mainly for vocabulary (also an honor).
Midt in the bullseye for enhver bibliofil. Veldig bra essaysamling, der jeg IKKE vil komme inn på hvor jeg følte meg svært truffet... ;-)
