Roma: “We worry anyway. What does this mean? I’m not secure. How can I be secure? (Pause.) Through amassing wealth beyond all measure? No. And what’s beyond all measure? That’s a sickness. That’s a trap. There is no measure. Only greed.”

Glengarry Glen Ross is without a doubt one of my favorite films of all time and one of the greatest crafted films ever made. The acting is top notch, the cinematography and the settings reflect the characters brilliantly, and the dialogue.

The dialogue of Glengarry Glen Ross makes the film what it is, so it’s no wonder why I would love reading the original play by David Mamet. The dialogue in this play is so fast and always advancing the story and characters forward in such a satisfying and natural way, developing characters in such a way that it’s never hard to believe actions are committed nor is it difficult to find motivation behind actions. Truly perfect, amazing characters, even better dialogue, all while perfectly encapsulating the toxicity and masculinity that comes from a job such as this.

love it. so tight. clean structure, dirty dialogue. stuffs the american dream into a claustrophobic nutshell. not a lot of hope to be found here. ain’t 1 honest son of a bitch in the lot. a catch-22. be honest and get left behind, lie and get swallowed up. thing is, honesty isn’t an option.

very hard to detach the film version from these lines. al pacino owns ricky roma. jack lemmon owns levene. kevin spacey’s ice was perfect for williamson. i always read the “fucking cunt” speech with pacino’s exact rhythm and inflection. “where did you learn your TRAAADE” how could you not? i miss the scene with Baldwin.

Definitely a play that has Stoppards typically cadence-laden and colorful language, but this one didn't really grab me. It is definitely an interesting study of the sales industry, white collar crime, and the struggle between a businessman pounding floor and his administrative overseer. Of course, all of Stoppard's plays are intelligent and well-written. This one was just a bit slow. Maybe it plays a lot better on stage (I mean, what doesn't, other than 'The Crucible'?), but as a straight-up read, especially with no analytical intent, it was a bit of a let-down.

This was well written, and I felt very immersed in the time and place. But I just don't know that I am the ideal audience for this play. I think it would be more compelling performed, of course.
