Oof, this is a tough one. I feel like I absolutely hate the first part of this book. There is so much content that I don’t know how to deal with… And then the second part comes out of nowhere. Maybe it’s because it feels like the story actually starts there and I’m suddenly invested. And that makes me want to keep going. So I do.

i love a good slowburn so this is in that sense perfect for me. i didn't expect it to be as dark as it was, and as brutal either. i can't really say if it is a good or a bad thing really. it's definitely a fast-paced, character-driven story and, due to that, i feel personally that there could have been way more world building or at the very least more of a plot here. the setting was a little confusing sometimes, so i find it difficult to really relate it to the fantasy genre (besides the fact that there is a separate world reminiscent of ancient rome or athens (i think?) and a map (!).
i did quite dislike the treatment that damen received and laurent's decisions regarding him were really quite appalling sometimes, but i have some hope for the following books. how i feel about this as a whole is really complicated. i need laurent to not have a classic sob story behind all this façade... please....
do go into this with caution, as this deals with heavy topics with a heavy hand, such as graphic violence, very graphic sexual themes (in terms of violence, harassment and rape), pedophilia and the general rough treatment of slaves.

You always hear all these warnings about Captive Prince, and while all those themes discussed are there, they really aren't that bad. They are always discussed/used/mentioned with the gravity they deserve and there are so many other books that have similar themes just to sell it as a 'cute love story'. Just shows again that Pacat is an incredible author and I can't wait to read the next book.
I'll be honest and say that it wasn't exactly my cup of tea, hence the rating (which probably stands on 3.5), but overall I liked it! Am currently reading the second one.
I'm a bit turned off by all of the abuse, to be honest, and the sexual grotesqueness. But at the same time, this is the story's setting, and it's supposed to be like this. It's an ugly place where people are treated like this, so it makes sense.
The writing is very good. One thing I wish she would've done more of is descriptions, some more setting building, etc. It's very fast-paced, which I like because there isn't a dull moment, but sometimes I wish she'd spend more time on little things that help the reader flesh out the images in their head. But since her use of words is very eloquent and precise, I didn't mind it too much. And again, I like that it's fact paced.
More than everything I like the way she builds characters, and especially like how masterfully she can change a reader's opinion on a certain character. Almost every character turns out to be different than our initial impression of them - characters we thought were good turned out bad (Regent), and characters that were evil to the core turned out to have other sides to them (Laurent).
Overall, I recommend this to fans of the M/M genre! Came for the gay, stayed for the political talk and the plot. Who would've guessed it.

I love this book series so much, I find it hard to express it eloquently and without spoilers. I will say that the first is probably the least good of the trilogy. There's SO much to these books.
