a lot of parts that give me the ick… it’s all been said before in other reviews. i will keep reading on to see how the slow burn plays out because im genuinely curious to how pascat bridges the gap between the two and if laurent does anything to actually earn his eventual redemption. there were parts that seemed drawn out/unnecessary (rape scenes, repeated description of slaves’ treatment, etc.), but i still read quickly because i love some good political scheming and court drama.

DONT READ THIS BOOK IF UR LOOKING FOR A GOOD PORTRAYAL OF LGBTQ ROMANCE.
I was looking for spicy LGBTQ romance reads and this was NOT IT. Sexual slavery is disgusting. I did find Nicaise’s political maneuvering as a “pet” to be interesting but that was it.
Did not like the forced “love interest” because it’s obvious there is NO chemistry between the two characters. Laurent is uninterested, abusive, and racist. And any thought Damen might have about him is obviously Stockholm syndrome.
The way gay sex is portrayed in this book is really homophobic. All instances are rape and is seen to the characters as punishment and humiliation.
I was hoping there would be some redemption of the main characters at the end where Laurent would open up to Damen and there would be at least an explanation as to why he’s so mean. And maybe they would fight against slavery but HAHA NOPE. I should have DNF this book.
FYI: I usually give a book four or five stars if I had a good time reading it. So yeah, I hardly ever give two stars let alone one.

There is some heavy subject matter in this book, but its treated with the seriousness it deserves in the narrative.
Recommend checking the content warnings before reading, I didn't know before I started and almost DNFd but im glad I stuck with it because it gets better and better especially the 2nd and 3rd books.
Damen and Laurent are larger than life characters but are very compelling. Plenty of political intrigue and action once the story gets going.
