Trial by Fire begins with Elena’s interview to join the Hollywood Heroes, a superhero group living in LA, protecting the people from villains, such as Consequence. Elena takes the name Fuego and is thrown headfirst into a world of superheroes without training, but with a lot of support.
It’s a character driven story, which for the most part is great. Elena becomes absorbing; she’s an easy, likeable character, and her relationship with Lacey is compelling and consuming. That’s where things fall flat. Their quick-paced relationship overshadows some of the plot. Because of this, the pacing feels odd. There’s more detail in their romance—which isn’t necessarily a bad thing—than the plot. The issues between the heroes and the villains is underfunded.
While Elena learns some information along the way through research, through Lacey, and lightly suggests what might be the cause of her superpower, the book ultimately needed more guidance.
The real issue might be the length. I wanted more. Trial by Fire is boiling with potential.
Overall, Trial by Fire is a quick-paced, action based story. The superheroes vibrant, developed characters as well as diverse as hell, something rarely found in this genre. It was a fun, quick read, and entirely unique.
