I'm actually surprised at how much I liked this book. We had to read it in English class, and answer questions to it... but even though we were forced to I actually loved it. I Like the way that it flashes to the present, then to the past at the war, and also with some memories of Niska thrown in there. For those who haven't read this I really recommend it.

I re-read this book for the FSPL book club and loved it as much as I did the first time around. Haunting and beautifully written. I heard Joseph Boyden and John Ralston Saul speak at LitFest last week, and Saul commented that one of the things that makes Three Day Road so unique is that it is the only book he has ever read that examines WWI from a non-Western perspective. I've never managed to put what I like about this book into words, but that's it exactly: it's seeing the war through Xavier's eyes, through a narrator who doesn't understand the western idea of war that gives this novel its power.

RATW: 3/5

Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden is a story about war, about love and lost, and about important lessons. I had to read this book for an assignment for my English class, and I didn't hate this book. This isn't a book I would pick up on my own accord, but because of this situation I had to read it. This book is about Canadian history and we get a glimpse into what the Native people of Canada had to go through during the First World War.

This one surprised me, honestly. Why? Because it was a book I had to read for school and I ended up actually enjoying it. Crazy, right?
I'm not going to write a whole long review, but I do want to say that Three Day Road was just an all-around really good book. The different perspectives tied together to make a beautiful and REAL story that captivates you from the beginning and never really lets you go, even once you're done. War and violence, though, have never really been my thing and so some of the scenes were hard to read (which is understandable considering it is from the viewpoint of a WWI soldier) which is why I gave it 4 stars, along with the fact that the beginning for me was just a bit hard to get into. Otherwise, I genuinely enjoyed this book, and think that it was a good change from my regular scheduling of YA fantasy!
