I liked the descriptions and underwater vibes the book. I try really hard to understand and twist my mind in knots trying to justify a lot in books but in this one I could not understand why the two leads like each other so much? Like someone else said the ML is so wishy-washy, there are no concrete points in the book giving the FL a reason to think he likes her that much. Especially since they do not interact enough. This makes the end reveal/twist not make much sense.
So, he taught and deceived her for three years?? huh why was she not mad. They also didn’t have a lot of interaction at all, she’s only really known him for a month. I don’t understand the plot point of the father coming back to life? Since the dragon king didn’t kill him there doesn’t seem to be much of a motivation to be that angry at him and want to banish him to oblivion? It’d just be more meaningful if the dragon king did take her father. Oh also the betrayal wasn’t fleshed out at all?… it was really anticlimactic but there wasn’t any build up? I don’t know I guess. The ending was really confusing by and unfulfilling.
That said it was ok and kept me reading. The  painting aspect was interesting and very fleshed out.

A Forgery of Fate is about a girl who agrees to a marriage contract with a dragon lord to save her family, and in exchange she must help the lord overthrow the king. Lim's world building is visually stunning, and the characters are strong and likeable. The tension between the characters and in particular the mixed messages are crafted well. This is an enchanting fairytale fantasy.
