I adored this book. I love the relationships and how complex and human everyone is. When a character is in the wrong,
unless it's Dov, hated that guy,
I can still love them in a way that proves the author truly understood people and made the charcters have such a depth that I don't usually see. Even the character I hated the most became one who I could appreciate at some points.

It’s really stories about lifelong friendships that make me an emotional wreck.

I really appreciated the seriousness that gaming was given, both as a past time and a creative art and the descriptions of how sacred and intimate a space gaming should be really rang true to me. I also appreciated the idea of a representative audience of one as the genesis of great creative works, especially since it sort of created "muse" as a super category for friends, lovers, rivals, and sometimes even acquaintances. I'm not sure if I think that Sadie got better at understanding someone through mere observation in the ways that Mazer seems to prefer and intuit, while he seems to have gotten much better at verbal explication, but the creation of gaming as a sufficient alternate feels justified as a hybrid, a synthesis, and a deeper examination of motivations along the lines of acting.

I appreciated the experimental and reflective structure of the different parts of the book.
The referential layers in the pioneer part; the NPC part, the A/B structure of both sides.

The fictional elements are very well woven into the contemporary world, I believe there really is an unfair games with developers Sam and Sadie.

I don’t really understand the hype around this book 🙈 Don’t get me wrong, a couple parts did catch my attention
like Sadie’s pregnancy and Marx’s death
but I really struggled with the overall story and keeping me engaged. I understand the message but the writing style wasn’t for me personally.

It actually took me 10 months to read it (I started reading it back in October '23), because it was so boring and I did not like any of the characters and I literally couldn't have cared less if they succeeded in their game making, found love, or died.

Honestly I'm just glad to finally be done with this, because one thing I can't bring myself to do is to DNF a book no matter how much I'm not vibing with it.

Sadie Green and Sam Masur. A beautiful relationship between two people. This book will be challenging me for a long time post read to evaluate my relationships with people and recognize how important these people are and can be in my life. Emotional story, beautifully written, this will stick with me.
