The writing style by Zevin is gripping. Watching the story of two friends live and work together over decades and the realistic ways their relationship changes was masterful. There was quite a lot of triggering content but it was all handled delicately. I was so invested in the lives of these characters they felt so real to me as a reader.

I had heard great things about this book, which I expected to be in the ilk of Normal People. I didn’t feel any connection to the characters, though not unlikeable. This was an ok read during my commute but I was almost left disappointed by the book. I potentially had high/incorrect expectations but just didn’t love this book like I wanted to.

On paper this should be my kind of book, being about games with a generally platonic friendship between a boy and a girl.
And whilst I did it enjoy it, and the gaming references, it felt too drawn out, pretentious, and at times I could not stand Sam and Sadie.
Around the halfway point, I just stopped caring and more than once had to force myself to keep reading. And then in the latter chapters, I figured out the reveals before the chapters end (in the case of chapter 7, before I even read it.)

I do recommend giving this a read, especially if you do like literary fiction. But I do think it's been over hyped, and you should bear that in mind before reading it.

Been meaning to read this for awhile and finishing a production of Macbeth is what finally made it happen.

The narrative structure of this, sometimes reading like a retrospective on the career of Sadie and Sam, plus the focus on game design through the lens of a deep friendship + business made this an incredibly engaging read. The characters felt real and complex. The setting felt vibrant. I enjoyed the peppering in of theater as part of Marx's identity. I definitely understand why this keeps appearing on best of lists.

Fell flat at times but very good. A bit predictable at times and seemed like a complex love triangle which I don’t usually go for but intellectually written with nostalgia for the “golden era of video games” but very interesting nonetheless

This book was beautiful and poetic, but also nearly overwhelmingly emotional at times. I absolutely reccomend this book but also reccomend taking it in bits and pieces and practicing self care for any trauma it may bring up. My only complaint is that the ending feels a little drawn out and unnecessarily reflective, but that's a minor complaint. Overall it was a wonderful and enriching read.
