This is a very sweet ode to video games and meditation on friendship. I appreciate a book that understands that romance is not the most interesting or worthwhile form of love.
However, the littering of SAT prep vocab through the book is so distracting. The author makes sure to highlight they went to Harvard in their bio, but the use of language feels like the author is excited to have been accepted and looking forward to their first year! Like many books these days, it seems lacking in a good editor.
I'm not sure the book is worthy of the level of praise it's received--the writing is clunky and uninspiring and the characters aren't allowed much growth until SPOILER happens (plot trope growth cayalyst), but it's an enjoyable read for a late Gen X / elder millennial. It's a sweet story.
