Another collection of stories from James Herriot, set against the backdrop of World War II and his enlisting in the RAF. Memories of home, of Darroby and his wife and of course the motley assortment of farmers, pet owners and animals he's treated punctate his training and learning to fly. Wholesome and wonderful.

I listened to the audiobook read by Nicholas Ralph who was just excellent.

At the start of World War II, James Herriott decided to enlist in the RAF, despite the fact that he was a veterinarian, which was a reserved occupation at the time (meaning he couldn't be conscripted and he really didn't have to enlist). The two books that make up this omnibus edition tell the story of his wartime experience, along with the usual charming (and occasionally dramatic) events of life as a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales.

If you haven't watched either dramatized version of "All Creatures Great and Small," or read any of Herriott's books before, what are you waiting for? These stories will make you laugh, sometimes cry, and sometimes both. Highly recommended.
