I haven’t read much about Partition before reading this novel. I liked getting to know this family and their community, and it hurt to see the destruction. It’s a debut novel, so it’s a little rough: There’s some flowery descriptions, but also some childlike descriptions. Part 1 was kind of a long set up. Part 2 was the most engrossing for me. Part 3 kind of lost me.

This book was beautiful and heartbreaking. It was so immersive and compelling in its prose that I had dreams about trying to fix Partition. I only knew the outlines of Partition history before reading this, and the violence and upheaval experienced by the novel's characters has fleshed out the conflict in detail. The young sisters Alma and Roop were a complicated mix of naivete and disconcerting astuteness.
