it's just... not very good? there's potential, I guess. but the writing just isn't there with this book. not with the plot and certainly not with the characterization.

A fun introduction to Locke and Key.
I am not a fan of insta-love so this story was perfectly paced for me because these two characters had to get to know each other and even when they gave into the physical stuff the emotional attachment took time.
What I like about this author is she puts time into her mysteries that the characters get involved with. It makes the story just as much about the crime as it is about the romance.

Just in the mood for some re-reads and originally I started with the Sinister in Savannah and was like why not go back to where it all began.
I love being slowly introduced to this whole world of characters.
I definitely love Sawyer from the get go with his big gray Maine coon Bones.

“I want you as my friend and lover today, tomorrow, and maybe much longer. We deserve this, and I refuse to let either of us throw in the towel because it’s scary’’

Audiobook: 5 stars
Book: 4 stars

If I was reading this book and not listening to it on audio, I probably would have been way more pissed about it. There is some things I really dislike in books in it. Locke was kind of a fucking asshole sometimes and I totally get why he was wary of getting into a relationship, but what I really disliked what that he never told Sawyer those reasons and just sulked on his own. I hate that. This is the kind of miscommunication that I hate. And I also dislike how Sawyer went on a date with someone else, something else I hate in books.

But I was having way too much fun with the audiobook and with them solving crimes together. And I loved their banter. And yeah, it overshadowed all of the things I would normally have been very annoyed with. I just fucking adored it instead of being annoyed. I blame it on the audiobook being so fun. I was listening to this while doing a particulary hard homework today and I had so much fun just listening to these two solving crimes together, it was a very welcome distraction.

This book is pure fun and Locke and Sawyer are both really strong main characters and I really really enjoy both of them. And damn they’re so good together, both as a couple and as partners at work. These two are pure fun together.

All in all, I really loved this and i’m so ready to dive into the second one!

This is one of my all-time favourite series, I just love Royce Locke & Sawyer Key, so much! Their last names always make me laugh!

They have both suffered losses; Royce his best friend, work partner, and first love. Sawyer lost his husband 2 years ago and has just left his old job at the Sheriff's department. Royce is grumpy and doesn't warm up to Sawyer. They are new work partners and are thrown in at the deep end.

I loved the two cases and watching them investigate them. They work well together, even if Royce won't admit it. Royce has hidden his sexuality deep and Sawyer is testing his resolve. I loved the push and pull and watching Royce finally give in. They are hot together and I can't get enough of their sexy times; talk about fireworks!

This book is in Sawyers POV, the next is in Royce's, and the last in dual POV. I think that works because you get to know them so much better. They are both hurting and not really living, especially Sawyer. They bring each other out of the darkness!

Perfect Pairing

This was a wonderful, much needed murder mystery. I felt a little overloaded with two murder mysteries in one book but didn’t mind it. Locke and Key were a nice couple. I like how their upbringings were completely different. I hope their families make more appearances in the following books.

I probably should have read this series before Sinister in Savannah but here we are. It's so wild seeing Royce and Sawyer as anything but a happy couple that is super coupled. Impressed that the plot wasn't just one case. Loving the world building going into office and familial politics. Seriously, though, Aimee Nicole Walker is an amazing author so I'm not even the tiniest bit surprised at how great this book was.

This story is told from Sawyer Key's POV, so I'm interested to see what Locke's POV would have been. I love a good enemies-to-lovers story with a slow burn and this fits the bill perfectly. Add in the tragedies that mar both Locke and Key's pasts and things get interesting. Walker does a great job by making the characters the focus, not the crime they're trying to solve. This is yet another series I can happily add to my TBR!
