i loved LOVED the premise of this book and i wish i'd loved the execution just a little bit more. i had trouble getting into it because i found the main character so bland and uninteresting at first but as soon as Alice's character clicked for me i was locked into the story!
overall, i thought the story and world were fun and interesting, and i enjoyed the academia aspect but i wish it had committed a little more to the relationship aspect? i felt like despite being TOLD about Alice's relationships with the people around her, the narration didn't show me much of what she felt until the last act. i think marketing this as a love story was a disservice to it, honestly. it was barely there, and i think i would've enjoyed it more if it had been a friendship story maybe?
i still really liked it and i'm looking forward to finally delve into more of R.F. Kuang's writing!
