Love the premise of the book. Lots of interesting complexities to tackle between clones waking to find their previous selves all murdered, ethics of cloning being questioned, the  flashbacks between past & present day, earth and Luna laws, etc. Unfortunately it all sort of fell flat. I listened to this as an audiobook and the dialogue was laughable at times. The premise never really came to life in the way I hoped.

I read this in an evening, it was exactly what I needed - fast paced, twisty, with murders in space. Definitely not the best written book out there so it's an honorary 4-star because I can feel it got me out of a slump. If you can look past some inconsistent character actions and some stilted dialogue you will like it.

DNF because I can't get into hard scifi right now and it didn't hold my interest. Will come back in the future when it suits my reading mood.

Liked: the concept was gripping -> 6 clones waking up to their predecessors' murdered bodies floating aroung the cloning bay? closed door murder mystery in space?? Discussions on the moral, ethical and practical implications of cloning?? sign me the fuck up. I like the characters' unique backgrounds and the ethical and moral dilemmas around cloning were also interesting.

did NOT like: the writing was (imo) really atrocious -> flat, one note characters, very awkward and unnatural dialogues, the characters don't have individual voices (with the exception of Hiro, who ended up grating on my nerves most of the time). The writing also really wasn't immersive and tense/suspensful/action scenes were so very flat! I didn't like the pacing: the flashbacks (while interesting for the context) were placed strangely and often cut the momentum of the present-time timeline imo. The theme of cloning and all the moral/ethical dilemmas around it could have been presented in such an engaging way, but it really fell flat for me, which was a huge letdown.
The concepts and material were there, but I found the execution so lacking that finishing the book felt like a struggle. I'm really bummed because I was very excited about the premise!

Just really enjoyable. Space problems, but clones this time. Lafferty did enough world building that I felt really clear on how cloning worked and why it was controversial, and untangling the mystery became less of the point as new tensions unraveled and old connections came to light.
