Six Wakes

Things I liked: complex murder mystery where everyone has something to hide and things are much more connected than they appear; discussing moral, ethical, religious, economic, and social ramifications of human cloning; and a brilliant folding in of overlapping information as the perspective shifts between our six main characters.

Unfortunately, it was a lot of dialogue and without a professional voice actor, it got really difficult to differentiate who was speaking whenever we had more than two characters in conversation. Also not all of the characters got equal treatment: the narrative favored Maria, Hiro, and Joanna, leaving Wolfgang, Katrina, and especially Peter kind of in obscurity.

I was also expecting more open queerness. There are a few mentions of using hacking as a way to facilitate permanent gender reassignment for trans clones, but none of our actual characters mention being queer even when they've lived several lifetimes.

Honestly, this would have made for a fantastic movie. However with such a steep dependence on dialogue, it didn't really sell me on a book.

Wonderfully thought provoking! Discussions to be had about so many aspects of the book. Loved it.

This was such a unique story. I loved the intricacies of the clones and past lives. solid 3.5-4 stars.

"no. not you. dont go." WHYYYY

this was a great book, esp if your just getting into sci fi. it might be hard to keep track of everything but the complexities of the characters is beautiful. it really makes you think abt forgiveness and growth.

Great twists at the end. Some of the jokes characters make are a bit cringe/cheesy.
