This would make a great class read-aloud, especially around Earth Day or complementing a unit about climate change and extinction.

Some difficult messages with regard to humans' impact on animal habitats tempered with hope and optimism that a new balance can be achieved.

Animal and train characters are particularly well-done, with wry and dead-pan humor. Fanciful elements like the Candy Car lighten the mood.

Various facts about animals and habitats are sprinkled in.

If I had children, I would definitely give this to them - since I don't, I gave it to the neighbours' kid and she loved it! A very funny and moving book, which you will blaze through like a train with a rocket engine attached to it

This is a great story to read to children! It has beautiful illustrations within the book and a great message about the environment.
I did need to look up some of the animals mentioned in the book and wound up making a Google Doc with pictures of the animals for when I read this book to my niece.
I found the main character to be a bit annoying in the beginning but I guess it is to show growth of the character.

I love it when a middle grade novel doesn't shy away from climate troubles. Also some of the plot points would surely be played for horror in Grossman's adult work and I had to laugh whenever they were just 'cute and fun' for middle grade. Let's not worry about the mental consequences of being turned into a tree for an undetermined amount of time. Just worry about the talking animals.

Premise and beginning 3.5/4, execution 2. Feel like the story skimmed a lot. Also sort of heavy handed. Plenty of areas where I was confused about the true intended audience. Not bad but not as good as I expected.
