This is a hard book for me to rate. The last 30% moved at a rapid clip and contained most of the plot of the book. I really enjoyed this section and wish it had been expanded to fill the bulk of the story. However, between the 20% mark and 70%, the book dragged. The two main characters were holed up together and mostly fixated on whether they would or would not have sex. Yawn. 

The FMC was also grating. Despite intentionally setting the events of the book in motion and getting precisely what she planned for, she acted like she was a passive bystander of events outside of her control. She repeatedly denied having any agency or responsibility for the consequences of her own actions. While she takes a more active role in the final section of the book, I did not see any believable character growth to explain the change. 

The MMC was a more interesting character. He also starts as a relatively unlikeable person. However, his growth over the course of the book is more organic and convincing. I appreciated the way he grappled with the moral consequences of actions he took in his backstory. His was the weightier character arc, and I wish this story had been solely his rather than having two dueling main characters. 

Ultimately, while the book is not without merit, I can’t honestly say that I enjoyed reading it.

More like 3.5. Rast was really hard to like until nearly the end. Understand, sure. But like, no, not really.

Also if Claudia had actually treated her sister like an adult, this would have gone so much smoother and that was infuriating. Amy has a bad leg but she’s not incapable and she’s definitely not stupid.
