This book was cute! Loved the diversity and family representation. The spicier scenes were well written but the actual relationship parts between the main characters felt chaotic. Every time they were around each other was a fight, and one that never felt comprehensively resolved. Some scenes with her friends felt weird too like there was extra information that didn't add to the story at all. However, I think the author did a great job writing Trixie's joy and love of her occupation and her passion, which as a sex toy saleswoman she should have! Trixie's characterization was well done and that's why I kept reading.

Happy Endings has lots of positives like it passes the Bechtel test. Trixie has great friends that boost each other up In their personal lives as well their career pursuits. Thien-Kim Lam also doesn’t follow the ridged formula I’ve been reading lately in the romance genre, the story has a nice flow. The love interest was a little frustrating for me. Andre and Trixie were living together in New Orleans, where Trixie is from and where Andre relocated. The couple we’re together for two years when one day Trixie came home to a break up post it note (he had his reasons.)Now two years later they coincidentally meet in DC, where they are both living.Trixie sells sex toys, opening the door for very honest sex discussions. Andre is managing his late mother’s failing restaurant. He doesn’t ask for help because he’s hard headed and keeps to many secrets. it made for many frustrating situations, putting that aside this was a cute love story, with awesome foodie descriptions.

I feel like I would have much rather read about Trixie and the other boss babes than hear about Andre. He struck me as really immature, and I feel that Trixie would have been better off without him.

How does this book only have 300 reviews??  This book is *highly* underrated.

This book is everything I wanted in a romance book: two strong characters who clearly care for each other and who miscommunicate only because of struggles balancing real-world issues of finances, ambition, and insecurity. Andre is not the perfect love interest, but I think it’s a very encompassing and honest portrayal of men I know who struggle with asking for help and expressing themselves. And I’m so glad that he grew.

One expects love in a romance book, but what makes this book shine is that it’s based entirely on a politics of care.
Trixie and Andre are both dedicated to their family, friends, and community. And their loved ones are equally dedicated to them.
Mike Chen’s arrival in the last part of the book may seem like a magical solution, but I am distinctly a fan of it. Let’s actually celebrate the people who are giving back! And while there aren’t enough grants out there, let’s celebrate when they do happen or when Keisha gets accepted into an incubator or Trixie gets a good rate on a co-op. Don’t knock this ending because it’s happy; celebrate it.
.

Trixie’s group of friends are also everything I’d want from female friendships. They help support each other’s goals while also giving no-bullshit advice to one another about relationships. I’ve seen some hate about the name “Boss Babes,” but this name is so on point for me. It screams camp and fun group chats that overuse these emojis: 💅✨🎉💛. I have these friends and love to see it in print.

Also, Trixie is effortlessly inclusive in her sex positivity and thinking healthily about sex. We need more books like this. These are the healthy sex scenes I want. And I want my grandma to have a healthy sex life too!

This book is also great representation by an author looking to undo harmful stereotypes of Asian women and interracial relationships. Trixie feels very rounded and real. It’s so wonderful to see this.

I loved this fun read, pick it up if you haven’t already!

P.S. if you needed more incentive to read it, there are killer recipes in the back to create some wonderful reading ambiance.

Happy Endings was a blast. She moved to DC from NOLA ago to prove to her immigrant parents that she can make it in a non-traditional career. She wanted to be a therapist, and now sells sex toys and wants to open her open boutique. He returned to DC from NOLA when his mother got sick, taking over the restaurant and trying to do things as she would have in her honor. They also used to date.

And of course they cross paths when she holds a bachelorette party as his restaurant, with a sex toy display on the table. She's never forgiven him for breaking up with her with a post-in, and he's never stopped loving her. You can imagine where this leads.

She needs the sales to win the grand prize at work so she can open her own boutique, and he needs the sales revenue if he's going to even attempt to keep the shop. It's a match made in heaven. More or less.

My only complaint is that the ending had two really big things happen-
the restaurant catching on fire and being declared a complete loss and her father having a large and serious heart attack
- that are barely addressed in the epilogue. I wanted a few more chapters about what happens next, and then the jump to the epilogue.
