Wow! This book was soooo good! The plot was really, really interesting, but I really love how even though the entire book was first person, the reader was left just as in the dark about information as the other characters. I absolutely did not see the ending coming, and I feel it was so refreshing to read something like that, whereas many other books the reader knows things that sometimes the narrorator doesn't. I want to read the other books in this series so much!!!!!!

One of my favorite YA books as a child, all because Sage is such a lovable character. Back then, the twist was unexpected for me. But on rereading the story, I appreciated the details that hinted on that twist. Great book, and I do hope the rest of the series holds up.

I'm much older than the target audience, but this book didn't really grab me at all.
The plot was decent, but the ending was pretty predictable - although I enjoyed reading how it all came together.

If I had known this was a MG book I wouldn’t have read it so I’ll give it a 3 star instead of a 2. Bc I thought it was YA at first and oh gosh…just no. But MG makes much more sense
I am genuinely surprised to see how high the overall rating for this book is and that this book has won awards because it is glaringly obvious to me that the writing, plot, and characterization is done incredibly poorly and I find it baffling that others do not see it as well. Sage is supposed to be an unreliable narrator, but instead of telling the story and scenes in specific ways, he just doesn't tell the reader about entire important scenes that happened that he later reveals he did. There is a big reveal about three quarters of the way through that there is no foreshadowing for and is less of a twist and more of a giant info dump. So many of the characters were flat, boring, and lacked any motivation. Imogen has absolutely no agency; Sage tells her what to do and how to feel about her life and when she expresses her desires he tells her that she's wrong and she's going to do things the way he wants to do them. It's horrible and I hate it and feel so bad for her. There's this rock that's supposed to be important but Sage doesn't ever mention it outside of two instances. The plot is so boring, there is very little going on, and because we have no foreshadowing there's no tension, it's just reading about Sage being a brat for 300 pages. Then, at the end, we're supposed to think he's secretly this mastermind that planned this whole intricate set up? Absolutely not. Nothing about this book worked for me. I have the second one but I'm definitely not going to read it, there's no reason to. None of the characters were compelling and there wasn't any sort of cliff hanger at the end. Would not recommend.
