Like always a fricking pleasure to read this book. I am so obsessed. When I was little and I read this book it was my absolute favorite and when I found out a few years ago that this was actually a series I couldn’t be more excited. I wanted to wait for a good moment to take my time and start this series but never got around to it. This time I was looking at my bookcase and saw this book and thought fuck it here I go.
I like the point of view we are given. You follow the main character through all the events. I really love the main character and the story in general. The pacing of the book is just right, not to slow and not to fast. Enough things happen so it isn’t boring but you also don’t get overloaded with information. I find that that is mostly the case with first books of series but it’s like you are learning with the main character. This book truly is one of my favorites.

I read this book in almost exactly 2 hours. I mostly read it to pass the time. One of my professors recommended it and lent me her spare copy. I thought it was predictable, but I kept reading because it would be satisfying to know whether or not I was correct. And it was (I was right). It was fun to read... not sure if I'll read the rest of the series though. Shoutout to my creative writing professor tho, I love her.

This book was a surprise! A wonderful, fun, and refreshing surprise. Did it have some cliches? Sure. But the whole competition spin thrown into the long-lost royalty cliche was brilliant and a ton of fun! I loved sage, his voice was so snarky and clever. I also loved all of the side characters as well. I am absolutely picking up the rest of this trilogy!
