I wasn't sure if this book would live up to the hype, but it definitely did. I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would and will definitely be reading the next in the trilogy!
This book does not stay on my shelves. It's no Ranger's Apprentice, but had enough action and intrigue to keep me reading!

The pacing of this book is really good - I found I was very drawn in as there was always something going on, some plans afoot.
It is a story where you often don't see into the mind of the protagonist fully - often with him only revealing his plans to the audience at a similar time as he does to the other characters. I am usually someone who needs to be more in the mind of the character, but in this book it was intriguing, and showed his intelligence. Yet, this does give a bit of a disconnect between the reader and the characters. I find unlike most books I really enjoy, there are no characters I love.
That plot twist though???? I didn't even know if it were real at first or just the narrative they planned to tell.
Overall a real page-turner. Easy to understand (which can be an issue for fantasy books) but still cleverly done, and you can't predict what will happen at any point. A book that started similar to other books I have read - where a group is training together for a certain purpose, put as competition to each other - but became something very unique.

I read this book over a decade ago as a child. It has stayed in my mind for that long. I could never remember the title -- just that I loved the story.
It was wonderful to finally find it again, and it was better than I remembered.
