This book is all the rage with Twitter friends lately, so I had to read it. It had me hooked from the beginning, as the plot was something I hadn't read, and the writing was smooth and moved along nicely. I will be recommending this to those students who like The Ranger's Apprentice series, for sure. There is a lot of action, suspense, and there are many times I was surprised at the turn of events.
A solid 3.5/5.
A group of orphans is pulled by a wicked man claiming to have good intentions into a scheme to fool the country and claim power as his puppet king. A tale of good versus bad, but still somehow lacking a tug on the heartstrings at the end of this book. Perhaps that is yet to come in the next two books of the series?

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I have a habit of buying a book that looks interesting and then never picking it up. This was definitely one of those! I'm so glad i finally decided to pick it up!
The story is set in a fictional world with a kingdom. There is something tragic afoot in the royal palace and many nobles are scouring the countryside looking for orphans of a specific look and age.
The character we follow is named Sage. He is a wily orphan who honestly does whatever he feels like and ignores anyone who tells him different. He is witty, but also tries to take care of everyone else, sometimes by hurting more than helping.
We get to journey with him as he is chosen as one of the few and then prepped for a possibility to enter the royal palace.
I really enjoyed this story! It's technically fantasy, but there is no magic system or magic creatures. It's middle grade level.

Enjoyed this, but there's a pretty major problem: it's clear from the outset what the ending will be, which takes some of the enjoyment away. Also a bit too heavy on the petulance-as-character-flaw that seems to be rampant in books about teens (see e.g. the Hunger Games trilogy). Overall a quick, fun read. Recommended.
Well done! Adventurous, enthralling, at times funny, and other times intense this story was quite the fun ride. I just love Sage! He's a really cool character. On to the sequel to see where the ride will take me...
4.5! I thought this would be a silly read to mellow my brain out but instead it was a WILD ride. I almost never get the rug pulled out from under me with a twist the way this went. I was along for the ride and never aptly guessed ahead even once. I got through this in one afternoon and can’t wait to read the rest of the series, and possibly all of the other adventurous books by this author. What a BLAST.
