An amazing story. Perfect for those who like a dark fantasy story with political intrigue, but are not that interested in magical themes (surprisingly enough there are no wizards and witches and magic spells in this series at all unlike 99% of novels with medieval-times kingdoms 😝). The M.C is the loveable type who has some flaws albeit has strong morals. Absolutely one of my favorite novels😍.

Fun YA quasi-fantasy novel with an engaging main character and a well-done twist.

We really enjoyed reading this book (my son and I). We are excited to see where it leads.

It was really good but I did guess the ending or the big plot twist about a 6th through the book. Even though I knew what was coming I still thought it was enjoyable and had a fun time reading it.

First of all, I have to thank Esmeralda for recommending this to me. It was amazing! I love Sage, he was so cunning and mischievous, it was a great personality and done so well
SpoilerI never even guessed that he was really Jaron. That caught me completely by surprise.
. It was nice to have a main character who was intentionally annoying and frustrating and stubborn, then turn right around and you realize that it all has a reason behind it. He's not just some arrogant kid, he has meaning and motives and all for the greater good otherwise. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book; if it's anything like this one it will be well worth it.

3.75 - I'd read more from the author if I run out of other TBRs but its not something I'm running to Libby for book 2 on. Interesting premise and the end pulled through but the beginning took a while to get into.

This book reminds me of a middle school game of thrones. The main character, along with two other boys, are competing to see who will act as the prince of their nation. The royal family has died and a courtier is going to pass one of them off as the long lost younger son of the king. The book had intrigue, action, and hints at a potential romance. Most importantly, it was appropriately violent and graphic. The point was still made that people died, however it was not detailed graphically like Martin would. My only problem with the book was the middle; it moved very slowly for about 100 pages before becoming more engaging again.
