This book was fantastic! So entertaining. I loved the characters (or loved to hate them). I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next.

This was a really enjoyable book to read. It is about an orphan named Sage who is taken from the orphanage by a member of court and groomed to be a lost prince to take the crown. Sage resists the training yet you start to wonder about him and the ease at which he figures things out and does things taught to him.

There is a twist near the end that really observant and quick thinking readers will have wondered about before it happens. Readers who miss the hints will be surprised. Either type of reader will be satisfied with the twist and be saying, "I knew it!" or "That makes sense!" after it happens.

I really enjoyed reading this book and it was a quick read with the writing style making the story flow quickly. It is best for readers who love fantasy novels without the magic or teens who are into adventure stories since the book is not overly complex in style.

It was fine. Didn’t give enough backstory/world building that I usually like. But I didn’t expect the twist towards the end so that kept me engaged enough to finish strong. By my read dates you can see it took me a while to get into, but I also listened so that may have had something to do with it.
Don’t think I’d go on with the series though. There wasn’t enough to engage me in the story to want to continue.

This is a well written and engaging middle grade fantasy. I listened to the audiobook of this with my two kids, and I rounded up because it was such a hit with both of them. Honestly, those of you who read books with your kids will understand how finding something that appeals to everyone can be a challenge. Success!

The plot is straightforward and the characters are mostly predictable, but everything just works to make it a fun read for a pretty wide audience. We are definitely continuing the series.

Really fun story. Pretty predictable though, and there were a lot of parts that felt rushed and were not explained very well. I would recommend it to anyone.

Age: 4th-middle school (disclaimer: there are a few death scenes)

"In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king's long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point -- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage's rivals have their own agendas as well."

I totally wanted to slap the arrogant main character throughout the book
Spoiler (although it was nice to see that his cockiness was complimentary to his hiding technique)
but the suspense and mystery is perfectly suitable for the age group. Although the setting is fantasy, the writing style focuses more on adventure and plot instead of setting and character. Also a complimentary tale to all the princess fantasy books out there.

Really loved this fast-paced, funny, and clever book much more than I thought I would. Highly recommend to reluctant readers and those of you who need to attempt the fantasy genre but aren't a huge fan of it--this barely makes the cut as fantasy, but does, just.
