I haven't been so thoroughly entertained by a book in a while! There is nothing remotely mind blowing about this book, but it was just so entirely solid. Memorable characters, exciting action, tension and careful plot building. I cannot wait to jump into the second book of this series. It reminded me of the fun I used to have reading when I was younger, and I felt almost nostalgic after finishing it. It really was a great book to bring me out of a reading slump.

There is a really good plot and a cliff-hanger ending...but not to cliff-hanging to be annoying which I def appreciate.
I read this book in like 2 hours because it was so good! I likes the courage it shows in the book.
Overall It was an amazing book & I recommend it! Also Sage/Jaron is my new book boyfriend!

I didn't mean to read this book all at once, but I did so accidentally. The "twist" is incredibly obvious the minute you so much as read the summary, and increasingly so once you actually get into the book. Two chapters in, it had become crystal clear that the main character was knockoff Eugenides, so honestly I wouldn't have it any other way, obvious or not.
What should you expect?
If you guessed "a lot of whining, truthful but misleading vagueness, a brief stay in a dungeon, manipulation, and finally a Dramatic Reveal" you would be correct.
Fun, if you like knockoff Eugenides and bad guys getting predictably and thoroughly turned on their heads. (I do.)

I loved it! Sage was so witty and fun to follow and I loved the plot twists even though my little sister already told me everything before I started reading. This book made me want to read more middle grade books.

I enjoyed all of the twists in this book! I audibly lol’d at moments and got emotional. I love that Sage isn’t an entirely reliable narrator in the sense that he doesn’t tell us everything which helps keep you on your feet! I would recommend others give this a read. It was an easy enjoyable read
Can't say enough about this story! Caught me completely by surprise and now I'm dying to get my hands on the Runaway King! Excellent mystery with espionnage, treachery and impersonation all playing a big role in this clever plot.
Recommended for grades 7 and up. While this does take place in an imaginary kingdom, as yet there is nothing else to deem this a fantasy. Will work for students who love a good mystery and/or adventure.

Eh, your average YA sort of novel. Saw the twist ending coming a mile away. Not really interested enough to go looking for the next in the series.
