This book was really great! The first time I tried to read it, I couldn't get into it. The second time, however, I read it in three days. The beginning was slightly slow, but there was a plot twist near the end that I had thought about but dismissed. I need to read it again with my new view of the main character! All in all, 5 stars.
There are spoilers in this review!
Alright, so this book definitely wasn't meant for someone as old as me (not saying that I'm old, mind you). It's probably aimed at children as young as fourth and fifth grade. The twists were obvious. I knew from the moment Conner said Imogen was mute that she actually wasn't. It would be too much of a challenge to write into the story. I also knew that one of the boys was actually going to be the prince--they never found his body? Please. I wish that Sage actually wasn't Jaron, because it would've been so interesting to see that play out. But this will certainly satisfy a younger boy or girl. There is better (what would you call this?) ... medieval fiction...? out there that presents new ideas and a more exciting plot line. For instance, try the Spook's Apprentice. Amazing book series, awful movie. If you're looking for something that will simply engross someone in reading, this could be a good pick, but Wings of Fire might be better (juvenile, but much more engaging than this book).
Anyways, it was fine, so I'm giving it 3/5 stars.

As predictable as it was, I still really enjoyed it. There were parts that I was even questioning what I thought was going to happen. I'm going to hop right in the second one ASAP.
Meh is about all I can say about this book. The plot was predictable and not exactly innovative. The world was boring, basically 16th/17th century Europe renamed. I was expecting magic and got none. There wasn't even anything about the world that distinguished it from any other fantasy world. I knew the big secret three chapter's in. Nothing about this novel explains why it is apparently so popular. I won't be continuing the series.
Read it for book club!
I don’t love rating YA books just because I’m not necessarily the target audience and I have a hard time comparing them to others. However, if I had to I would probably give it a 3.5! I surprisingly liked it
Definitely YA however it was written well enough that I was intrigued and wanted to keep reading! I thought the concept of the story was good despite me guessing the twist pretty early on.
I liked that it was written in a way that sage could hide secrets from the readers which added a good layer to the book.
Honestly I would totally read all the books in the series if they are all like this one!

First off, I just want to say Jennifer Neilsen is my absolute favorite author! She is the reason I like reading today, and this book played a HUGE role in that. It's one of my favorite series today! I will never stop recommending it!
The book follows the story of an orphan boy named Sage, who is very snarky, sarcastic, and rebellious. I normally can't read many books without magic, but this book was magic itself, making me laugh, cry, and scowl with every page. I loved the rebel in Sage. He was always making me laugh or-more often-making me call him a fool. Everything is so perfectly planned, everything is there for a reason. Even in hopeless times, there is a plan. I learned to just assume that being kidnapped, killed, or imprisoned was all a part of some plan.
Yes, for those of you who love romance, there is a love interest in the book. It's not like spicy, or the main point of the book, but it's there. She's a good friend to him, keeping him out of trouble, and being his mother. (Also, there is a small love triangle later in the series).
Now, I want to go over one of my favorite parts, the plot twist. And holy cow, it's crazy! You would never expect it (unless you're my friend named Rachel who can guess the whole plotline of any book and be correct) at all. I read the page with the plot twist at least 20 times to finally understand what it was getting at!
Overall, I am OBSESSED with this! If you like historical, fiction, battle, and medieval-type books, you will LOVE this book!
