Not as quite as mesmerizing as Pedro Paramo, but this little collection of Juan Rulfo’s morbid and morose short fiction is teeming with his stunning prose. This is the sort of dark and difficult writing I think a lot of people try to emulate but come off seeming “edgy” where Rulfo seems a simple reporter of matters of fact. He deftly portrays a side of his culture and era with vignettes of life and conversation. What separates him from imitation is his ear for conversation, which really involve the reader immediately without the need for much description. All in all The Burning Plain is an exquisite exploration of sordid side of Mexico and humanity
