I really loved the layout of this book, and appreciated the effort by Questlove to make music history more understood in regards to it's alignment to actual history. There were some good a-ha moments too that had me think through something differently.

Overall though, for me it was too much. His thoughts need to be read slowly and picked apart and listened to (when he's talking about specific songs or albums), and admittedly I didn't take that kind of time when reading. Sometimes I felt a bit lost or rushed.
3 stars for me!

I loved this trippy, detailed, passionate book about Questlove's journey through music and major world events. Every chapter offers fresh commentary on songs and artists and producers, noting connections I'd never known about and making a lot of songs make so much more sense. I'd happily put music students of any genre in a classroom with Questlove and let him teach how music is history and how music history is an enormous ever-changing web of singers and songwriters and arrangers and experts in every single genre all contributing to sounds t hat transmit meaning.

Really enjoyed listening to Questlove talk me through this. A fun read/listen for any music lover. He devotes a chapter to each year he’s been alive and chronicles history thru the music at that time. It’s dense, so take it a chapter at a time slowly- or you’ll feel like he’s just listing off headlines. Disclaimer: I was only able to listen to 70% of this. It expired and I could not renew. It had been made available at all libraries across the US… but I guess it was only a limited time. Hoping they’ll bring it back so that I can finish.
