Honestly I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. It’s a very character driven story that relies on the reader being very invested in Kaysar and Cookie’s relationship. It wasn’t bad it was just not that interesting. The entire book felt like there was no plot, just different stages of their courtship. I really wish there has been something more than recharging power as the goal.
Also Jareth should have been featured more, I liked him so much more than the two main characters and he’s really under used. All in all a decent high fantasy book.

Initial thoughts... 4.5 - I really enjoyed Heartless. I experienced a Hades and Persephone vibe, which I love. The main characters Kaysar and Chantel "Cookie" are heartbreaking and flawed, but work in the best way. I really am looking forward to reading the next book and getting answers to several things.

A Favorite/Fun Quote:

"...I made fae in a can. Chicken of the siege." Lol

I read Ruthless first, so I knew Cookie and Kaysar but not their story, and OMG their story! Kaysar did everything he could to take care of his sister after their parents died, but when he was taken by the Winter Court royals, their lives took different paths. Kaysar is consumed by his rage over what happened to him and guilt over losing his sister. Cookie has been second to everyone in her life expect Pearl Jean and Sugars, so when she finds herself in the Fae world all she wants is to go home. I like Cookie a lot more in this book than I did in Ruthless, now that I know more about her. I also kinda hope Jareth gets a book next.

My biggest gripe was that the book came off as unfinished: the worldbuilding was flimsy to the point where I couldn't picture what the setting looked like, the characters felt one dimensional with glimmers of depth, and the romance was based on a foundation of the two main characters not communicating in any way after learning a fact that makes them uncomfortable.

This was pretty much a perfect book for me. Lots of dark humor, amazing spice, a brooding MMC who is powerful, obsessive and unhinged and a fiery FMC.

Forced proximity, enemies to lovers and grumpy/sunshine tropes. Slow burn. Great writing and world building. Plus I'm a sucker for fae royalty.

Loved this and the next in the series (Ruthless). I really hope the author continues this series, I love everything Showalter writes but this is my favorite book and series.

Ok these books are getting weirder and weirder... Reminding me more of the crazy of G. A. Aiken books but despite the psychosis of the characters I'm loving it.
