This was a super cute short story for the Australia Reads 2020 campaign. A wholesome, feel good quick read with a pandemic (and subsequent lockdown) feature reminiscent of our 2020.

I read The Greatest Hit primarily because I wanted a nice, short, light-hearted read that would help me achieve my reading goals for 2022.
That's pretty much what I got with this.
Will Kostakis is obviously a very talented writer, and the character development is actually okay for the limited page count of this book. There's lesbian and Jewish rep to be found here, and it was interesting to read a story set during the pandemic.
Where it fell down for me was the plot - there wasn't a whole lot of it to speak of. I also found the constant jumping backward and forward in time to be confusing, as there weren't a lot of clear signposts to help me. The whole thing just felt rushed. I do see the potential for it to work if it were rewritten as a full-length novel, but Kostakis wrote it for the purpose of encouraging more people (young adults, in this case) to read, so I doubt this will happen.
The Greatest Hit was a nice read for what it was but ultimately it needed more to win me over.

Read for Australia Reads Reading Hour!
I absolutely loved this Australia Reads exclusive short story. It’s one of the best short stories I’ve ever read. I felt connected to the characters, the story was interesting and it’s queer! The ending was satisfying however I would love to read more about these characters.
I encourage everyone to pick up a copy - and quick! These are limited.
