At first the book was rather peaceful but then it twisted in a way that left me dumbfounded. I also love Yukio Mishima's poetic style of writing.

This book got me out of a reading slump. It's short, dark, and explores human nature through a marry band of child sociopaths.

Don't miss this one.

Another nihilistic story. Not without obvious references to Lord of the Flies and echoing of "Beat" generation writers. Something about the post WW II years seems to have brought out dark thoughts on the future of young men (not just as part of society's dire prospects) in those days. The story is compelling and confusing at times. The protagonist is sympathetic though the story occasionally confuses the reader with where the character is emotionally. This is probably a compliment to the author who is dealing with the minds of adolescents which are not consistent in perspective but may be a problem with translation.

I need to get around to re-read this because it's just one of those books that stuck with me regardless of what I was going through. It has a presence like it silently stares at me in the back of my head. A world-view-changing Novella, but that only if you relate to the situation and ideology that Noboru or Ryuji present.
