Tek kelimeyle harikaydı. Yukio Mishima, özellikle de bu kitap hakkında oldukça pozitif şeyler duymuştum. Fakat yazarı ve kitapları öneren ve benim de bu kitabı almama sebep olan kişi ünlü Youtuber PewDiePie oldu. Kendisinin favori yazarı olan Mishima'yı övüp övüp bitiremediği için ben de çok merak etmiştim.
Sık sık fantastik ve bilim-kurgu okuyan birisi olarak bu kitap çok daha fazla realistikti. Olay örgüsü de karakterler de günümüzde karşımıza çıkabilecek şeyleri anlatıyordu. Kitap dul kalmış 30lu yaşlarındaki Fusako, onun oğlu Noboro ve denizci Ryuji çevresinde geçiyor. Üç karakter de aslında birbirinden çok farklı ve sevilesi kişiler. Fakat benim özellikle ilgimi çeken 13 yaşında olmasına rağmen diğerlerinden çok farklı olan Noboro oldu. Noboro'nun arkadaşları da oldukça ilgi çekiciydi.
Kocası öldükten sonra yalnız kalan Fusako aradığını Ryuji'de buluyor. Fakat Ryuji deniz ve uzaktaki yaşamı her şeyden üstün gören birisi. Bu yüzden Fusako ile Ryuji arasında ne olacağını çok merak ediyor insan. Bu ikili ilişkiye bir de Noboro girince her şey değişiyor.
Yazarın okuduğum ilk kitabıydı ve çok sevdim. Yazarın stili ve özellikle kendi hayatındaki şeyleri de koyması çok hoşuma gitti. Mesela Noboro'nun hayatı Mishima'nın kendi hayatına oldukça benzer. Batılaşan Japonya düşüncesi de bu kitapta da yer alıyordu. (Diğer kitaplarında da bu görülebiliyormuş.) Kitap ilgi çekici başladı, ortalara doğru olaylar karışmaya başladı derken sonu mükemmeldi. Okuması oldukça kolay fakat bir o kadar da zevkli harika bir kitap. En kısa zamanda yazarın diğer kitaplarına da göz atacağım.

I just finished it and I know it's one of those works that will linger in my mind for a very long time. I intend to read more Mishima.

Before I start my review I'm taking into account the fact that I am reading a work from Japan. Mishima wrote this for a Japanese audience and even the best translation can't capture the culture nuances and subtext of a work. I am only able to give my white American perspective on a translation of this book. So take that into account when you read this review.
To start off I think this book has an unhealthy and obsessive relationship with death. I'm not sure if the author insert character is Noboru or Ryuji but neither of them are very likable. I can't really side with either of them. Noburu is a violent sociopath who thinks he knows everything at thirteen. I hope we weren't supposed to find Noboru's gang's philosophy intelligent as their basically the pre-internet version of edgelords. Ryuji is comparatively more boring. But both Noboru and Ryuji share an obsessive love of the sea which I found excessive and I'm a person who loves the sea. But Noboru and Ryuji were in love with the sea.
This feels like a book about generation gap but I feel like stories about generation gap work best when the gap is relatable. When we relate both to the kids who we remember once being like and the adults who we now are. I didn't really relate to the kids in this story as it felt like they were just mean-spirited boys who found some philosophy to justify their vileness.
I've seen this book often compared to Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The difference between this and Lord of the Flies was that in Lord of the Flies there was a progression to the violence. The boys didn't start off violent. But the longer they were on the island, isolated from society as fear and paranoia set in, they became bloodthirsty and violent. That's why I prefer Lord of the Flies to this.
I feel bad about being negative on this because I was excited to check out a non American or British author and I understand my negative reaction might be due to a bad translation or some cultural context I'm missing. So this review is only reflective of my point of view on this specific translation.
