Disturbing at some parts, quite quiet at others therefore producing an unsettling atmosphere.

It feels a lot like a Japanese version of Lord of the Flies, but there were some great skin crawling moments that showed a real sociopathic bent. For that alone, I liked the book even if there were times where I had to put it down in distaste.

The most disturbing thing about this book is that there are clearly several ways to read it. I saw the sailor as a fairly decent guy and the boys as symbols of all that's evil. I bet your MRA types would see the boys as creatures of Nietzchean will and the sailor as a lame cuck.

I'm just not cultured enough for stuff like this. I think I was supposed to get something out of this? But there was a salior, a lonely mother and some nasty boys.

What I find most compelling about Mishima is the straight-forward severity with which he writes, the ethical absolutes in which all of his characters operate under. The degree to which a philosophical system can totally dictate someone's life (whether they rigorously follow society's rules [Patriotism] or they invent their own systems [Sun and Steel and indeed, The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea]).
