There’s just something about the writing style that doesn’t click with me. I was also not a huge fan of the incredibly huge philosophic nature of the narrative. It’s worth the read if you like weird stuff that may scar you, though.

Death, glory, masculinity, rightwing politics, westernization of Japan, beautiful lyrical language and although I don’t understand it I can still appreciate these ides that are so foreign to me.
It’s comforting to know that teenage boys can be as weird and tribal in Japan as they can be anywhere else, and just as determined to be outside societal norms while being so very much just like everyone else.
Woman starts dating a sailor, boy is initially impressed then sailor doesn’t live up to his impossible expectations and he and his pals come up with a scheme to deal with this.
Written by a guy who grew up in a samurai household and committed seppuku when he’s finished writing the books he’d planned, and I’m sure there’s something of that mindset in this book somewhere.
CW: cat torture and death, voyeurism.

I love this title.
I could not get into it, however. Weird.
