It's bizarre yet the world building and descriptions used to convey the story are inclined metaphorically to have its realistic aspects, though too much can be a bit distracting and makes readers lose focus even though it's a short novel. The chief seemed like some kind of a cult master, though it was small-scaled in a sense, as the factor was—he was an avid reader, even at the age of thirteen. It was the kind of character honed that could attract and entice people with its persuasiveness or it may have been in career-orientation like a lawyer because you knew too much at some point, you played around with the law, but once again, small-scaled. It was horrifying to read. It took advantage of how adults see children—purely innocent and in this I don't know if it had a bit of that.

A haunting coming of age story that anyone who finds Freud intriguing (albeit controversial) will have a field day with. I read lord of the flies and this back to back and it made for a very interesting journey through the struggles of young men as they find their place in the world, or even just amongst one another.

The book is a fictional tale of a sailor who left the sea after years of being a glory seeking seaman for the love of his life only to find himself falling prey to a group of psychopathic young boys who judge him to have failed to live up to their standards of a human being. The man who always longed for death, finally abandoning this twisted desire and choosing love has in the eyes of the woman's son failed to live up to his impossible ideas of living.

I enjoyed the book's prose and the unsettling character of the boy and wished for the sailor and mother's happiness.

In The Sailor Who Fell from Grace With the Sea by Yukio Mishima, we follow the 13-year-old main character, Noboru, and his friend group.

As the blurb describes it, they are savage and brutal, rejecting the 'adult world' as illusory, hypocritical and sentimental. They make it their goal to 'rid' the world of 'evil' (e.g. fathers because they are too soft) before they turn 14, the age at which crimes in Japan become punishable. Yes, crimes. The blurb was not lying. The things these young boys do are absolutely insane and disgusting, yet the author portrays them almost as if they were normal.

Maybe I just did not get the point the author was trying to make, but I could not quite follow the plot and simply thought it was weird and absurd.

It pains me to say this as a fan of translated fiction, but this book was not it. I do not know if it is Yukio Mishima's style of writing I dislike or the way he creates his characters, but I severely disliked this book and its characters and I did not get any joy out of this, to the point of taking almost a month to finish such a short novel and being this close to dropping it.

I am willing to give another of Mishima's novels a go, but I will not be recommending this one.
