While I don't necessarily agree with the views portrayed in this book towards your country (in this case, Japan), masculinity, and the pursuit of glory, I do respect where the author is coming from. I just feel that they're too extreme (based on my postmodern ideals).

Still not sure how I feel about this. While it's beautifully written -- laden as it is with metaphors and symbolism that would no doubt make a teacher's day -- there's something disconcerting about the subject matter, which is no doubt part of the book's intention. Noboru and his gang of disillusioned friends are hard to connect with (by design, presumably), and they remind me somewhat of "Lord of the Flies", considering what the boys did

to the kitten, and eventually to Ryuji

. That wistful ending strikes the perfect note between the horror of what's to come for Ryuji and nostalgia & yearning for a life that will not return and remain unfulfilled.
