I know this book is set in the 80s, but the transphobia in it is still gross to me.
The fact that Bernardo's murder was literally a trans panic hate crime is never addressed despite Dante being the victim of a super similar crime.
Ultimately, this book is a fine queer read for late middle or early high school, but it's not radical or terribly interesting.

Never before has a book made me cry so much. A modern Holden Caulfield, Aristotle Mendoza, is depressed. And then he meets Dante. Together, they explore what it means to be a gay Mexican teenage boy.
