An old couple lived in a lovely house, but were both very lonely. The old woman declared that a kitten would make it better, so the old man set out to find one. He came across hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats...and couldn't pick just one! They all traveled back home, but the old woman could only choose one. After asking which was the prettiest, all of the cats fought and fought until there was just one forlorn kitten left; and this kitten was given a loving home with the old couple.

A classic picture book that is still popular despite the black and white illustrations and kitten-vs-kitten brutality.

Lowkey funny at times and has a soothing little repeating phrase about the "hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats" that I think some readers will vibe with. The art is also nice in a stark, vintage-y way, and the cats look cute. But honestly the ending makes me sad and would have as a kid, too. :(

A bit terrifying for an adult to read. Billions of cats draining a pond, eating all the grass, then eating each other? But a very important lesson was learned after all was said and done; be humble. The humble cat lived and was adopted by the lonely old man and woman. Also, don't be greedy. The old man wanted all the cats which was not sustainable. Taking what we need is enough.

You can also tell this is a translation. The English is a bit plain and repetitive in some parts.

Oldest American picture book still in print and now in the public domain. I read the copy available through the Internet Archive. Very cute. And yet disturbing in the Beatrix Potter “abrupt acts of lethality are simply to be expected on any given day” sort of way.

Plot insgesamt nicht so toll, aber es fängt gut an und der Titel ist einfach überzeugend.
