"In our noisy cities, we tend to forget the things our ancestors knew on a gut level: that the wilderness is alive, that its whispers are there for all to hear - and to respond to."
This book was majestic in its visual projection and storytelling. I only wish it was filled with more detail. Warning, it may cause some watery eyes.

I literally read this in one sitting. Sure, it helped that I was on a 6 hour flight with little else to do... but still! Multiple people recommended this to me, and not knowing anything about the book, I was initially hesitant due to the title... which gives off certain vibes. I'm sure you know.
I don't think this is the best writing I've ever read... and that seems fair! After all, Lawrence was first and foremost a conservationist. I don't expect his prose to blow me away. So yes, the book sometimes relies on a little bit of "corny" writing and dramatics to move along the plot. The last chapter becomes a little self-promotional, like a last ditch effort to make sure that everyone donates or visits or supports his next book. However, in its essence, I'm just still so in awe of what Lawrence and his community achieved at Thula Thula. His love and fierce protection of the animals shine through, and for that... 5 stars.

I loved this book. It was such a page turner - Anthony has so many fascinating stories. I loved the acknowledgement and discussion of the intelligence of animals and nature. I was sad to learn that he died on 2012. Such amazing work he did. I greatly enjoyed reading about the elephants and their wisdom. Apparently when he died they came to his home and behaved the same as they would have if a herd member had died.
