It feels too trite to say this was weird and wonderful, but...it was weird and wonderful. Strange and graphic and sometimes off-putting in a fascinating way--I kind of just couldn't get enough. The characters I started out hating (as people, not as characters) I ended up loving, which is not a turnaround I often make, and the only thing that really keeps this from being a five was that I was just a little dissastisfied with the ending.

I disliked or didn't care about any of these characters or the plot?

Thrilling start. The middle drags a bit. Beautiful end.

I think this story has the high ambition of like [b:Akira, Vol. 1|93371|Akira, Vol. 1|Katsuhiro Otomo|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1343804802s/93371.jpg|90020] or something. And I couldn't concentrate during most of the middle, but that might have been my personal schedule interfering with the book.

I'll give this another read in a year from now, maybe everything will come together during a second read. I do appreciate everything Chandler Klang Smith has devoted to this book. It's obviously a labor of love and I look forward to more from her.

'The Sky Is Yours' by Chandler Klang Smith would seem to have lots of elements I would like a story: a decaying futuristic city, a group of characters from different social structures, and dragons. When it was all done, it felt like lots of ideas that didn't really go anywhere.

In the futuristic city of Empire Island, things are not going well. Dragons circle overhead, a reality star named Duncan is sitting in the remains of her crumbling empire, and a young girl named Abby is trying her best just to find food and shelter.

The ideas and setting were grand. The writing was decent. I just didn't actually care what happened to these characters in the least. When the book was done, I felt like I would remember the interesting setting, but soon forget anything that happened.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Hogarth, Crown Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

My first attempt to read The Sky is Yours ended with me throwing it in the Audible App's archive. It starts with a rich brat crashing on a garbage island and immediately taking advantage of a naïve girl. I wanted nothing to do with it.

I forgot about it and when I encountered the title again, I gave it a listen. When you continue reading, you understand that his is a satire about late stage capitalism and no one likes the rich brat.

As we follow the three main characters, the afore mentioned rich brat, a naïve girl raised alone by an insane mother with anti-technology beliefs and my favorite, Swani a rich well educated and over achieving girl. We learn more and more about the corrupt world they are inheriting.

This is a mix of stupidity, and smarts. Some parts are dumb on purpose and some are dumb for comedic effect. Some parts are smart and some downright poetic. Each of our protagonists will find a mentor that will help them grow, but they are not being cuddled and their paths are winding. Again, I was impressed with Swany's journey.

Swany is also overweight, I'm not saying it's never referred to as unattractive, but men are attracted to her both physically and intellectually.

The ending detracted a bit from my rating, as we step back from the interesting characters and take a more distant view of the aftermath.

Surprisingly much more cerebral than expected.

I still need to think about this book. I think Smith started out with her three main characters, grew more attached to the one, yet still needed to follow the other main characters.

A lovely, strange and bizarre book.
