I was hoping for more from this and while I do appreciate the lack of an overdramatic Bond villain speech in the ending it did fall a little flat after all the build up.
The psychiatrist taking advantage of a mentally ill patient trope was only interesting before the supernatural element was removed. And why the monkey? And what were the five senses even relevant for?
I liked the general vibe and it was a fast read which got me out of a slump. The book had the potential to be quite unique and memorable but lost that for me near the very end.

“There are places in the desert where things can be hidden and never found.“
Oh yeah, that’s the stuff. It comes as no surprise that the newest thriller-noir from one of horror’s most skilled writers of the past two decades, dare I say all time, categorically fucked. Ronald Malfi’s “Senseless” methodically traipses readers into seedy bars, dysfunctional family homes, spiderwebs. Present in every one of this author’s novels, this one being no exception, is the mastered craft of innocuous storytelling: Malfi creates seemingly simplistic, truly twisted imagery from thin air, fracturing boundaries around relative safety and mental fortitude. Shit’s dark. I don’t even trust myself, half of the time, by the end of his books. The three “Senseless” narratives twist together in a sinister French braid, a cold relevance and correlation that builds separately only to domino together, trailing all the way to the desert. Blink the sand away from your eyes, what do you see?
“Who’s the thing dressed up as something it’s not?”
Time and time again, Malfi never misses.
4.5/5 “Have you met the monkey?”

In a dark and haunting Los Angeles, 3 seemingly unrelated lives, a detective haunted by an old case, a woman whose fiancé’s son may be hiding something sinister, and a drifter obsessed with a mysterious, monstrous woman, slowly begin to intersect. As their stories unravel, a chilling blend of crime, and obsession, revealing the monstrous truths lurking beneath the surface.
This was my first and most definitely not my last Malfi book! It was a cleverly plotted, twisty, brutally dark thriller. How he weaves these plot lines together blew my mind. It’s not just a murder mystery, there’s an eerie, otherworldly element that gives the story a chilling, unpredictable edge. This is atmospheric psychological story is set in a gritty, haunting Los Angeles, that digs deep into the characters’ psyches, showing that the real horror often lies within 😱 ALL THE STARS!!!! 🌟
