This is definitely my least favorite Malfi book I've read so far. I really, really disliked one of the POVs. I don't usually connect with a fever dream narrative and that portion didn't work for me. Additionally, I usually like the ambiguity in Malfi's novels. Is there something speculative going on? Is it all the in characters' heads? But this was too up in the air for my tastes. I needed a little bit more in the answers department than what we got. I really liked the detective's perspective and occasionally the writer's, which kept this book from being a total flop for me. But half good/half bad only equals to a 3 star.

I love finishing a book and immediately looking up other readers’ interpretations of the ending.  This was a long book but engrossing and I couldn’t wait to pick it up every day. There was quite a bit of gore towards the end which I didn’t think was necessary but I really enjoyed the story and how it was written. Will probably read more by this author.

Agree with someone else who said this book carries a True Detective vibe. A solid mix of dark and downright strange, and very clearly a well thought out mystery that keeps you snapping pieces together along the way. My second read of Ronald Malfi after Small Town Horror and I'm not remotely disappointed.
