Feels a little disjointed with its various strands never really reaching a satisfying connection or conclusion. For a book set in Los Angeles it doesn’t really feel like it. Sure, there are some passing mentions but the don’t add any flesh to the story. Found that particularly disappointing. My least favorite Malfi to date. Damn. I really wanted to love this.

ronald malfi is one of my favorites right now, i love the weird little details in his stories that set him apart from other writers. i loved the references to other books in the malfi cinematic universe in this one. senseless gets a solid four stars. i loved the buildup and payoff of the mystery, though i do feel some questions i had went unanswered in an unsatisfying way. otherwise this was a ride, with lots of fascinating, fully-realized ideas in play.

I've read everything Malfi has written, so trust me, I'm shocked to DNF this book but jesus christ, this book needed an editor. It was meandering and boring enough already, but I finally had to give up when the character Maureen finds a book full of murder photos in her creepy stepsons bag and instead of going straight to the cops, takes it to his dad and then backs down immediately when he refuses to believe it, despite the fact that we've seen her stand up for herself over shit that isn't half as important as this. And then does that infuriating thing where a character refuses to disclose crucial information to another character for reasons that make no sense, so this tired fucking plot can drag on for another million hours. I'm starting to think Malfi is really like Stephen King where he writes incredibly compelling, tightly plotted short stories and novellas, but his longer novels just turn into bloated messes with too many storylines, time jumps, inconsistent characters and loose threads.
