I really don't know how much pain and death a human being can take in a matter of two days. First, Arthur Morgan's death at the end of Red Dead Redemption 2 that I had to play through. Now, Kate Harker and Isla...why?!!?! I was so so so attached to Kate and Isla from the very beginning. I'm just relieved that August, my favorite character, was not killed off.
But other than pain and death, this entire duology is one that will stay with me for the rest of my life. These books are so beautiful and almost poetic. I loved the characters from the very beginning (especially August Flynn :)). I loved and enjoyed every second as our two main characters grew and developed into strong, complex leaders.
The plot was amazing and drew me in from the very first time I read This Savage Song. I have to admit, it's sad. This book made me cry so much, and I hate when books make me feel sad and grief, but the beautifulness of this story clouded all of that.
I have mixed feelings about this, though. I love that I read it and got to meet August Flynn and Kate Harker. But I hate that it made me feel sad. I hate that I had to experience yet another death not even 24 hours after I had to experience the death of Arthur Morgan from RDR 2.
I think I am going to, sadly, have to take a break from reading to revive my broken heart. I hate that I am starting the new year off without a book, but I just can't push myself to read another word.
I will be back, however, once I feel better.
Victoria Schwab...you hurt my heart and I will never forgive you for that...but you also made me see beauty in the littlest of things. All in all, thank you for producing this art.

Oh my...OH MY...OH MY GOODNESS! I'm not that often speechless after reading a book, but this book has done it, this book left me utterly speechless! This was one of the most amazing reads from 2018 and I don't think I'll be able to describe why and what the book has done to me. I will give it a shot, but forgive me if I sound a little incoherent, because. OH MY GOODNESS!

What I really love about this book (and also about the first part of this series) is that the worldbuilding is not explained, it's not written down, it's literally shown. We're thrown into the story and bit by bit we figure out what's going on, what has happened, how we have to fill the gaps between book one and two and I love it. It acknowledges my intellect as a reader and it makes sure the story, despite the complicated world and mythology, never gets slow.

And then there is the plot. The plot of this series, and especially of this second book, is really awesome and well thought out. The built up towards the finale and the ending is phenomenal and even I missed a lot of signs, which is why the ending surprised me, even though I think I should have seen it coming somehow. And don't get me wrong, even though the ending made me tear up, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

Last but not least there are the characters: Complicated, intelligent, interesting, layered, realistic, flawed and always in development. The way August grew and developed is amazing. Kate's journey is very impressive to read. There is Ilsa, who might not be a main character, but who does steal every scene she's in. And then there's Soro, who is fleshed out so carefully even though they are never really the main focus of the story.

This is pure brilliancy. I can't can't can't wait to read the rest of Schwab's books!

I read this one at the wrong time and I am so sorry about that. Still, I loved this. I was thinking about giving this three stars but in the end I changed my mind, because holly fucking god, I knew someone was going to die but I always assumed it would be August, not Kate. I am kind of surprised and emotional and speechless and sad. I knew this wasn't a happy story, I knew someone would die and I would be disappointed if they didn't but still, I am sad.

I wanna read this one more time, at the right time, hopefully :'))
