Loved it!!! Admittedly I had to trudge through the very beginning, but as soon as Harrow Lake and some of the supporting characters started getting fleshed out I was hooked! I loved the mystery and discovering things along with our protag Lola, watching her slowly unravel at the seams.

With most horror/thriller novels, I always feel like the ending gets rushed. I feel that's somewhat the case with Harrow Lake, but it feels much more earned compared to some other books I've read lately. There have been breadcrumbs left here and there, so it feels more like a payoff than a frantic rush to the finish line.

Honestly, the worst thing I can say about this book is that it's over! I want to read more!

Really gripping from the beginning, this had a quite unique setting and I was into it!

But in the end it was less of a horror spectacle than just a really sad story.
The repeated use of "optimal" was irritating, I had thought Lola's behaviours were pointing to some neuro-spiciness but by the end I thought not so much. And still some mysteries were unanswered.
Loved the descriptions of the tree and the Jitterbugs.

I didn't mind this, though I had hoped for something a bit spookier than it turned out to be.

I wish it had done a bit more to deconstruct the relationship between Lola and her father, but I guess she did realise in the end how messed up it was. The overarching theme was that the real monsters in our world aren't supernatural, they're people in our lives who look great from the outside but are terrible on the inside/in private. I liked that and how it was foreshadowed.

Plot twist after plot twist, and definitely a book I would recommend. The world building is amazing and very atmospheric
It felt like watching a comfort horror film even though it wasn't too scary. Really well done and a fun, dark read for fall.

Tightly written and well-done. If you enjoyed Night Film, check this out (although I liked this book better.)
