Interesting in theory, good mystery but didn't find the protagonist too likeable.

Super fast paced, and compelling. It unraveled in a really interesting way. However it’s extremely disappointing to finish the book not knowing who the real killer is. There was still some satisfaction in having this character grow to be comfortable with the unknown, but I’m not that grown lol
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Violence, Stalking, Death of parent
(Another 2 1/2 stars for me) There seems to be a pattern with BBC's Between the Covers book selections that favours weird characters with autistic behaviour, often as a result of some earlier trauma, that find themselves in a situation that turns them into amateur sleuths. Devil's Breath is no exception, and it seems that the author's intention is for the character to become a series with more books to follow.
Although, I was initially intrigued by the setting, my interest was quickly deflated, mostly because of the main character, Eustacia Rose, whose quirkiness was laid out as social naivety and, frankly daftness, and a plot that dragged on with very little to like or feel empathy for. I found the botanical and toxicology references a bit boring, especially as none of the plants mentioned ring any bell, and kept wondering why don't people drop dead right, left and center every day from plant poisoning (if you read the book, you will know what I mean). I do get that the book is written from Eustacia's perspective but the writing style is very much "matter of fact", and left me mostly unengaged. The plot itself felt a bit naive and crude. Eustacia is like wearing an invisible coat at times. London is featuring as a bland background with only the poisonous plants as a constant threat. Maybe there was a metaphor there that I missed.
To be fair, it was not all bad, and I did read it all. I was tempted to give 2 stars BUT I might give the next book a second chance.
