this book was very fun and on the light hearted side for a murder mystery. i liked the pacing of the story and clues. mc is a lesbian, neurodivergent (autistic?), and a knowledgeable recluse. i really enjoyed the plant info sprinkled in. all around the vibe of the book was mysterious, autistic, poisonous plant, fun<3

I liked the neuro divergent main character, and the facts and discussion of poisonous plants was an interesting and unusual theme for a mystery/thriller.
The problem for me was that the mystery was entirely unrealistic and the characters other than the protagonist didn't appear to act or react in realistic ways - especially the main police detective. At a few points this took me out of the story too much to find it a good read, although there were some elements I really liked.

I was hoping I would love this mystery focused on plants with a LGBTQ romance thrown in, but it didn’t quite hit for me. I liked but did not love the main character, and while part of it was due to her mental illness (never specifically addressed, but seemed to present as autism), part of it seemed to be her self awareness and inability to communicate with others. I was rooting for her though! I also LOATHED her first love interest she refers back to throughout the story. I also never quite loved the MC who disappears (the main crux of the mystery). The plant references were incredible though: so well-researched and interesting!

Honestly, this book really had me examining my internalised ableism in a way that I didn't expect. Did particular bits make me dislike Eustacia because she's being a creepy possessive stalker (valid), or because there's a description of a Autistic trait/experience that isn't particularly palatable in context (pattern recognition, strong sense of justice, hyperfixation, rules/routine)? I think there's probably a case to be made for both, someone can be a cunt AND Autistic. Can you blame a fella for thinking that though when she's out here acting like an incel-ly Joe Goldberg 👀
Regardless, I did actually enjoy the book more than I thought I would and enjoyed trying to figure our the mystery as we got more information.
