Collins certainly had a tough job in front of her: writing a prequel we already know the conclusion to. Every character other than Haymitch is more doomed by the narrative than usual, so it's hard to connect to them. Still, a few stand out as memorable. The most annoying part is her writing style, which has this uncanny ability to interrupt a scene or dialogue exchange for a paragraph or two of exposition; she's aware that there's an audience, and it shows. As the narrator, Haymitch comes awfully close to fourth-wall breaks on several occasions and even smashes right through in an early chapter to make sure we know he has 21st century opinions. Even then, the last couple chapters and the epilogue were tough to read, but worth the slog to get there. It doesn't really end so much as stop, but maybe after everything Haymitch has been through, that's the best we could hope for.

God that was so brutal. Probably the saddest of all the books. Really had the same tone and energy of the first two books.

Suzanne Collins is once again back at it to tear my heart into pieces. Haymitch's slow decent from a boy who was rather content in his life to the shell of a man we meet in The Hunger Games is as soul crushing as it is impossible to turn away from, proving to us if you thought you knew what happened, maybe you too had fallen for Panem's propaganda. The author had something and she slams you in the face with it, and I loved every second of it. Bring tissues with you, you're going to need them

And I thought the first four Hunger Games books were devestating. They absolutely have nothing on this. I fear for the movie, as I doubt it can truly capture the horror and heartbreak Haymitch endures. There is no teenage love story in this arena, just a boy trying to survive as literal children are slaughtered. That is a fact the earlier books and movies let slide a little, with the older protagonists who keep to themselves. But Haymitch's attachment to the younger competetors refuses to let you look away or romanticize the slaughter.

What a page turner. I was consistantly on the edge of my seat. I felt like a teenager all over again who fell in love with reading for the first time. It's been a while since i could say that I had a hard time putting a book down and that is thanks to the supsense and cliffhangers that Suzanne put in the very end of each of her chapters.
The most impressing part of this book besides her ability to bring poetry into so much darkness is the fact that you know what is to come and yet she manages to create disbelief and shock. What a trip this book was and I can't recommend it enough for those who wish to learn to love reading.
Besides the overuse of songs and a couple of cheap fan service that can be forgiven you can't deny the intelligence in the writing in which the consistant parallel with our world can't be ignored.
